The Ultimate Packing List for Digital Nomads & Long-Term Travelers
The Ultimate Packing List for Digital Nomads & Long-Term Travelers
One-bag minimalism tips that actually work for any climate and duration.
I’ve been living out of one carry-on plus small backpack for four years now, through Finnish winters, Indian monsoons, Balkan summers and Japanese humidity. Here’s the exact list that survived all of that, nothing more, nothing less. Everything fits in a 40L backpack (mine is 38L actually) and weighs 9-10 kg with laptop included. Works for one month or one year.
Backpack itself
40L max, front-loading (not top-loader, trust me), good hip belt so you can run for trains. Osprey, Tropicfeel, Tortuga, whatever, just not the cheap amazon one that breaks in month two.
3 t-shirts merino (mine are 150g Icebreaker, wash in sink, dry overnight)
3 long-sleeve merino (one thin, one mid, one thick)
2 pairs pants: one lightweight hiking zip-off, one black jeans that look decent in cities
1 fleece jacket (Patagonia nano-puff or Decathlon 100 euro version, packs tiny)
1 proper rain jacket with pit zips (not poncho, not “water resistant”, real Gore-Tex or similar)
1 pair waterproof approach shoes (mine are Salomon X Ultra, work as hiking boots and city sneakers)
1 pair flip-flops for disgusting hostel showers
1 buff / scarf thing (neck warmer, hat, eye mask on buses)
1 lightweight swimsuit (doubles as shorts sometimes)
That’s literally it for clothes. You wash every 3-4 days in hostel sink or laundromat once a week, always have clean stuff. Works from -15C Lapland to +40C Thailand.
Tech (don’t laugh, this is everything)
13-14 inch laptop + charger
Phone + long cable
Tiny 30-65W GaN charger that does both laptop and phone
One universal adapter (the one with sliding pins)
Old kindle or just phone for books
Cheap wireless earbuds (not Airpods, something you won’t cry over losing)
Small power bank 10000mAh
One short HDMI cable if you ever want bigger screen in airbnbs
Toiletries (all under 100ml for carry-on gods)
Solid shampoo bar (lasts 3 months)
Tiny deodorant stick
Toothpaste tabs or tiny tube
Folding toothbrush
Microfiber towel (size M, dries in 2 hours)
Ear plugs + eye mask in little case
20ml sunscreen stick (refill from big bottles when you land)
Small soap bar for clothes and body
Few plasters, ibuprofen, diarrhea pills, that’s the whole med kit
Other random lifesavers
Metal water bottle 750ml (collapsible one saves space when empty)
Spork + tiny plastic container for leftovers
One lightweight packing cube for dirty clothes
One ultralight daypack that folds into its own pocket (for hikes)
Tiny wallet with two cards + some cash, passport, vaccination pdf on phone
Padlock for hostel lockers
Two clothespins + 2m paracord as washing line

Pen and tiny notebook (customs forms still exist)
How to pack it so you’re not hating life
Everything rolled tight, shoes stuffed with socks and cables. Rain jacket and fleece on top for plane when you’re cold. Laptop in the daypack as personal item, backpack goes overhead no problem. Never gate-checked once in 70+ flights.
Cold climate hacks
Wear fleece + rain jacket on plane, thick socks too, you’re warm and bag stays light.
Buy cheap hat and gloves where you land if needed, leave behind when you leave.
Hot climate hacks
Merino still works, smells less after 3 days of sweating. Flip-flops live on the outside pocket.
The mindset shift
Stop thinking “what if I need this one day”. You’ll buy a sweater for 8 euro in Tbilisi or borrow a jacket from hostel if you’re really cold. Everything you “might need” is available somewhere on earth for cheaper than the overweight fee.

Four years, one bag, zero regrets. Try it for your next trip, thank me when you sprint through the airport while everyone else drags 25kg suitcases and looks miserable. What’s the one thing you still can’t let go of? Tell me, I’ll probably talk you out of it :)
