15 Underrated Summer Destinations to Avoid the Crowds

Travel

Quiet beaches, cool mountain towns, and European gems that haven’t gone viral (yet).
Summer 2026 is going to be chaos in the usual spots. Santorini is booked solid already, Barcelona locals are ready to throw water balloons again, and Dubrovnik… let’s not even talk about it. So here’s the list I actually use when I want sun, sea, mountains or cute towns without fighting for a square meter of sand. All still under the radar, all stupidly beautiful.

1. Gjipe Beach + Dhermi area, Albania
Crystal water, canyon you drive through, campsites and small guesthouses literally on the beach. In July you’ll see maybe 40 people total. Nighttime bonfires and zero light pollution.

2. Kotor + Lustica peninsula, Montenegro (skip Budva, go further)
Kotor old town early morning is yours alone, then rent a scooter and hit Plavi Horizonti beach or Rose village. Sea same color as Croatia but half the price and tenth the people.

3. Comporta, Portugal
They call it “the Hamptons of Europe” but nobody actually goes yet. Endless white sand, wooden beach bars, rice fields and storks. Stay in Alcacer do Sal 30 min away, rooms from 50 euro.

4. La Maddalena archipelago, Sardinia (but the tiny islands, not the main one)
Take boat from Palau to Spargi, Budelli, Razzoli. Pink beach still there, water unreal, bring your own picnic because barely any bars.

5. Cieszyn / Český Těšín, Poland-Czech border town
Half the town in Poland, half in Czech Republic, connected by friendship bridge. Cafes on both sides, castle hill, zero tourists. Perfect stop between Krakow and Bratislava.

6. Berat, Albania – the city of thousand windows
White ottoman houses climbing the hill, cool evenings even in August, mangalemi district feels like 100 years ago. Rooftop bars with mountain views and nobody instagraming.

7. Mostar + Počitelj + Blagaj in one slow day, Bosnia
Mostar gets day trippers till 4pm, after that it’s magically empty. Sleep in Blagaj by the spring cave, wake up to zero noise except river.

8. Velika Planina, Slovenia
Herders village at 1600m, wooden huts with shingle roofs, cows walking around like they own the place. Cable car up, hike, eat sour milk and štruklji, sleep in a hut.

9. São Miguel, Azores (but only if you rent a car and avoid Ponta Delgada after 10am)
Black sand beaches, thermal pools in the middle of nowhere, waterfalls you park right next to. Still cheaper than mainland Portugal.

10. Tulcea + Danube Delta, Romania
Take boat into the delta, floating reed houses, pelicans flying over your head, fish soup that ruins all other fish soup. Total peace.

11. Lofoten, Norway – but in late August when prices drop and midnight sun just gone
Tourist buses leave after 15 August, weather still 15-18C, hiking trails empty, rorbuer cabins half price.

12. Paxos & Antipaxos, Greece (take ferry from Corfu, skip Corfu itself)
No airport, tiny port, beaches you reach only by boat. Voutoumi beach on Antipaxos will make you cry, and you’ll have it almost alone after 6pm.

13. Piran & Portoroz back side, Slovenia
Piran is cute Venetian town without Venice crowds, then walk or bike to Strunjan nature reserve, wild cliffs and empty sea.

14. Sighișoara + Viscri, Transylvania, Romania
Sighișoara medieval center is tiny and perfect, then drive to Viscri fortified church and sleep in saxon guesthouse. Feels like you went back in time.

15. Ischia, Italy – the ugly sister of Capri that’s actually better
Thermal parks for 15 euro, gardens like La Mortella, beaches with water hotter than air. Ferries cheap if you avoid weekends.

These places won’t stay secret forever, two-three more summers max for some of them. Go quick, go slow, keep your voice down when you tell friends. Which one are you picking first? I’m personally running back to Gjipe before someone ruins it.

Pick a guide, choose a weird home, pack light, and go.
See you out there.
