From snowy Lapland cabins to sunny Thai islands, warm and cold getaways that won’t break the bank.
Okay, winter 2026 is coming fast and honestly, who wants to stay freezing when you can be somewhere amazing for not crazy money? Here’s my personal top 10 that actually work for real budgets. I mixed cold and warm ones because some people love snow and some people just want to run away from it forever.
1. Lapland, Finland (under 900 euro for a week if you’re smart)
Glass igloos are cool on instagram but way too expensive. Instead book a simple wooden cabin 50-70km outside Rovaniemi, rent a car with friends and split everything. You still see northern lights almost every clear night in January, plus saunas, frozen lakes and cheap reindeer soups in local markets. Flights to Helsinki are often 100-150 return from Europe if you book now.
Lift pass for the whole season is like 400 euro, daily pass around 35. Apartments start at 20 euro a night for four people. Food is ridiculous cheap, a huge shopska salad and a beer is 4 euro. Snow is reliable, pistes are long, and zero pretentiousness.
3. Georgia (the country, not the state) – winter in the Caucasus
Tbilisi is mild, Kazbegi is proper winter wonderland with snow up to your knees. Rooms in family guesthouses from 15 euro including breakfast and endless khachapuri. Mulled wine made with real saperavi costs pennies. January is low season so everything half price.
4. Thailand islands – yes, it’s high season but still budget heaven
Fly into Phuket or Krabi when prices drop after New Year (mid Jan is perfect). Island hop by cheap ferries, stay in bungalows 20-30 euro a night, eat street pad thai for 2 euro. Koh Lanta and Koh Yao Noi are quieter than Phi Phi and twice as beautiful.
5. Gran Canaria, Spain – the one Canary island that stays cheap
Forget Tenerife. Gran Canaria has 400km of beaches, mountains with snow on top (yes really) and dunes that look like Sahara. Hostels in Las Palmas from 22 euro, apartments in the south 35-45. Flights from mainland Europe often under 80 return if you’re flexible.
6. Marrakech + Atlas mountains, Morocco
City is warm (18-22C in January), mountains 2 hours away have snow and berber villages with fireplaces. Riads in the medina from 25 euro if you book directly, food markets at night are insane value. Easyjet and Ryanair fight over this route so tickets stay low.

7. Albania Riviera in winter? Trust me
Everybody goes in summer, winter is empty and magical. Saranda and Ksamil have apartments for 15-20 euro a night with sea view and heating. Sunny days reach 16-18C, perfect for hiking and eating fresh fish. Locals are bored and super friendly when tourists disappear.
8. Madeira, Portugal – eternal spring on a budget
They call it the Hawaii of Europe for a reason. Funchal hostels 25 euro, mountain guesthouses even less. Levada walks are free, black sand beaches, and those famous natural pools. Christmas lights stay up until end of January, feels festive without the crowds.
9. Transylvania, Romania – winter fairy tale without Dracula prices
Brasov and Sibiu look straight out of a storybook when snow falls. Cozy guesthouses with wood stoves from 18 euro, sarmale and tuica included if you’re lucky. Day trip to Bran castle or just wander medieval streets, everything half the price of Prague but twice the charm.
10. Sri Lanka south coast – the ultimate warm escape
After New Year prices crash. Trains along the coast are 3 euro, guesthouses in Mirissa or Tangalle 18-30 euro with breakfast. Empty beaches, whales still around in January, cheap surf lessons and the best coconut roti on earth.
Look, none of these need you to be rich or wait for perfect deals. Just book flights 2-3 months ahead, avoid weekends, stay in local places not big hotels, and you’re golden. Winter 2026 can be the best one yet, promise. Where you heading first?
